Clayton County Register, Thur., 03 Aug. 1933. Strawberry Point Point.

Funeral services of Mrs. Carl Baumgartner occurred Friday afternoon at the St. Sebald Lutheran church, four and one-half miles northwest of Strawberry Point, conducted by the pastor, Rev. E. R. Melchert, in German, assisted by his son, Rev. G. E. Melchert, of Waterloo, in English. The pall-bearers were Otto Weger, Otto Baumgaertner, Arthur Baumgartner, Martin Baumgaertner, Louie Baumgaertner and George Andreae. Interment took place in the St. Sebald cemetery.

Maria Helena, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Wegee, was born Oct. 8, 1860, at St. Sebald. soon after her birth she was brought to her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, in the sacrament of holy baptism. After a period of due instruction in the eternal verities of the Christian church, she was confirmed by the pastor, John Liszt, on March 29, 1874. Nov. 8, 1876, she was united in marriage to Carl Baumgaertner. This union was blessed with ten children, of whom three have preceded the mother in death, two in the early (about five words blurred) Mrs. Clara Rossbach, in the prime of her life.

The departed was a lifelong resident of St. Sebald. At the place where she was born she spent the days of her life, and from thence took her departure from this world. On the 8th of November, 1926, Mr. ad Mrs. Baumgaertner were privileged to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary in the midst of their children and grandchildren. The following years passed by uneventfully, but the evening of life had come. The days of this summer showed in the form of a virulent disease that there were not many days left of this earthly pilgrimage. All that human hands could do to prolong life was done, but God in his infinite wisdom had willed it otherwise than we.

The departed was a pious, humble disciple of her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. In the quietude of her life she showed forth unfailing faithfulness to her Lord and Saviour unto her end. In child-like faith she trusted Him who had been her help and stay during the many days of life, and this faith remained her precious comfort and heritage until her eyelids closed in death. She strengthened herself for her last journey, the Journey through the valley of the shadow of death, by means of the sacrament of the body and the blood of Jesus Christ, on last Sunday.

She was a loyal and devoted wife. With no small measure of self-denial, she stood at the side of her almost helpless husband. She was a loving and loved mother, who sought earnestly to bring up her children in the fear and admonition of the Lord. She tasted of the hardships of early pioneer days here in St. Sebald, and was privileged to experience the signal blessings of the Almighty, which rested upon the labor of her hands. With joy she looked forward to the visits of her pastor who brought her strength and comfort in the declining days, and she learned to suffer without complaint. The Master has come and has called her. It behooves us to give thanks to God for the blessings which he showered upon her, and not to sorrow inordinately in the time of our bereavement. Unto her has been given the better portion which shall not be taken from her.

Last Tuesday evening the angel of death released her from this limited life that she might made a partaker with the saints in light. She attained the age of 72 years, nine months and 18 days.

She is survived by her husband, seven children, Mrs. Wm. (Mary) Glass, Mrs. George (Hilda) Nodurft, Mrs. Wm. (Anna) Weger, Mrs. Fred (Helen) Hock, Emil Baumgartner, of this place, Rev. John Baumgartner of George, Ia., and Carl Baumgartner of Hastings, Nebr., and 21 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; also one sister, Mrs. Katherine Baumgaertner, of this place, besides other relatives and many friends.
