Clayton County Register, Thur., 27 July 1933. Pg. 01.
Kenneth Nichols, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Nichols of near Waukon, shot himself with a 12 gauge shotgun on the farm of his grandfather, Ross Nichols, about two and one-half miles east of Garber last Sunday sometime between noon and 3:00 p.m., when the body was found by his grandfather.
The grandfather had returned from a church picnic and immediately called Coroner _____ Oelke. at this place. From the investigation made it is presumed that he placed the muzzle of the shotgun to his chest and then discharged the gun with a stick. It is believed that death was self-inflicted though no reason is known for the act.
While his home was near Waukon, where he had been residing with his parents, he had been staying the past several months with his grandparents, assisting with the farming there.
He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Nichols, a younger brother and two younger sisters, as well as the grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Ross Nichols, at whose home he committed this deed.
(Note: The Woodmansee burial book of Allamakee county, Iowa, lists Kenneth D. Nichols, 1913 - 1933, buried in Sixteen cemetery, Allamakee county, Iowa.)
