Clayton County Register, Thur., 15 Jun. 1933. Luana column.
Saturday evening, June 10, about ten o'clock, Luana lost one of her pioneer daughters, when Mrs. Clinda Burgess McGonigle died at the age of 77 years. She was one of the younger daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Burgess, who were among the first families to settle in Luana, and has always lived in Luana, excepting a year or so in Missouri. She taught several terms in Clayton county schools, assisted by her brother, T. W. Burgess, part of the time he was postmaster at Luana from 1886 to 1890. She leaves to mourn her passing one son, Bart B. McGonigle, and wife, who have made their home with her for several years, to care for her during her failing years and last illness; her parents, sisters Mrs. Helen Truman and Mrs. Linnie Jemisen preceded her in death. Her youngest sister, Mrs. Neva Chambers, is in poor health at Devils Lake, N. Dak., and an only brother, Tom W. Burgess, is living at Eminence, Kansas, with their families. Her nieces, Mrs. Hattie Jensen, of LeRoy, Minn., who passed away several years ago, Mrs. Maude Truman Splies, of Luana, and Jay W. Truman of Oacoma, S. Dak., were brought up in the home of Wm. Burgess, more as sisters and brother than nieces and nephew, hence feel the passing of Mrs. McGonigle more keenly than the other nephews and nieces. The funeral was held Monday afternoon at two o'clock, from the home, with burial in the Luana cemetery beside her husband, John McGonigle, who preceded her in death Sept. 20, 1916.
