Clayton County Register, Thur., 25 May 1933.
Eighty-one years ago on April 8, 1852, Jeremiah Cassidy was born in Liverpool, England. At the age of eight years he came to America with his parents, Patrick and Mary Carroll Cassidy. After living for a short time in Wisconsin, the family moved to Fayette county, and then to a farm west of Elkader. At the age of ten he began to learn the trade of stone-cutting. In 1872 he married Katherine Aurelia Munger of Elkader, and from this union 16 children were born. He lived in Elkader for many years until after the death of his wife in 1923, when he joined his sons in Aberdeen, S.D. Later he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Attwooll, in Huron, where he died last Saturday morning, May 20, after a short illness.
As a stone-cutter and brick-layer he helped in the construction of many Elkader buildings. These works of his hands live after him as a memorial of his industry. He also will be remembered as a devoted father, sincere friend and a good neighbor. He was blessed with a comfortable old age, retaining an alert mind and good eye-sight so that he was able to continue reading on the great variety of subjects in which he had taught himself to be interested.
He is survived by three sons: George of Elkader, James and Fred of Aberdeen, S.D., and by seven daughters; Mrs. Myrtle Attwooll and Mrs. Katherine Sampson of Huron, S.D., Mrs. Nora Bentley of Isabel, S.D., Mrs. Blanche Bonnar of Beaver, Penn., Mrs. Elsie Christiansen of Cudahy, Wis., and Mrs. Mildred Lehner, of Sebeka, Minn. He also leaves two brothers, John and James Cassidy of Kansas City and 35 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held in Huron on Sunday afternoon at 4:00 with the Rev. Mr. Lockridge officiating, and at the George Cassidy home here in Elkader on Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 with the Rev. C. T. Brewster in charge. Burial was made in the East Side cemetery here. The lovely floral offerings were testimony of the affection and regard of many friends.
(Note: One surviving daughter appears to have been omitted from this obit, as shown here.)
