George F. Wheeler died Wednesday at his home after a lingering illness. He was the son of Hiram B. and Emeline Wheeler and was born at Gainesville, N.Y., December 8, 1856. He came to Clayton county with his parents in 1859. September 9, 1855 (Obvious error), he was united in marriage to Miss Sibbie V. Peters. To this union one son, Hiram, was born. Mrs. Wheeler died September 23, 1893. On October 24, 1900, Mr. Wheeler was united in marriage to Miss Rose Duerst of this place. Besides his wife and son Hiram, of Harris, Iowa, he leaves one grandson, a sister, Mrs. Mary Fields of Long Beach, Cal., and one brother, Ray D., of this place. As long as his health permitted, Mr. Wheeler always worked to help the town. He was one of the officers of the State Bank until his health failed. Mr. Wheeler took a great deal of interest in our public school and at different times was one of the directors. He was also president of the Strawberry Point district fair. He was a member of the Congregational church and the Guild of St. Andrew, both of which he attended whenever health permitted. Funeral services were held at the home Sunday afternoon and were conducted by Rev. T. J. Elwick, and the remains were laid to rest in our beautiful cemetery.
