Clayton County Register, Thur., 01 Mar. 1928. Garnavillo column.
Maria Emma Pauline Sherf [sic] was born July 4, 1913, as the younest child of John Sherf and his wife Maria Kruse. She was baptized July 11, 1913. The sponsers were Pauline Kruse and Emma Fehlhafer. At the age of three years she was sick with convulsions and since then showed some impediment of speech. Her father consulted many physicians in regard to her condition. Last year in February she was operated on for adnoids and tonsils at Iowa City. Since May 9th she attended school at Glenwood, Iowa, and on the 23rd day of January she took sick with appendicitis and was operated on on January 25th at Glenwood Hospital, an institution (word blurred...connected ??) with the school in which 1,750 children are kept who are taken care of by the state. As the appendix was ruptured, her case was very serious. Her father hastened to her bedside just as soon as the call came to him, and stayed with her almost three weeks. She was well taken care of by her nurses and doctors, and it seemed as if her condition slowly improved. It was therefore a shock to the father after he was at home for three days to receive the message of her departure. She died February 20.
She is survived by her father, her brother John, of Garnavillo, her sister, Mrs. Hehman Wehrkamp, of Guttenberg, and two brothers, William and Chris, of Read township, besides many other relatives and friends.
She had reached the age of 14 years, 7 months and sixteen days.
Note: Death certificate gives spelling of surname as SCHERF. Burial is given as in Elkader, but her correct burial place is the Garnavillo City cemetery where she has a gravestone next to the gravestones of her parents John & Mary
