Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 01 Dec. 1910. Elkport and Vicinity column.

A terrible and sad accident occurred at the depot Monday evening, which resulted in the death of Mrs. Wathen. It appears she was going to visit one of the neighbors just across the railroad tracks and not thinking of the approaching train she attempted to cross, and had just reached the center of the track when the engine struck her, throwing her onto the fender and carrying her a short distance, when she rolled off between the track and depot platform. When the train stopped she was picked up, but was in an unconscious condition, with a large scar on her head and her hip broken, besides several minor scars. She was carried to the home of her son, Bert Wathen, and lived until 2 o'clock Tuesday morning, when she passed away. She leaves to mourn her loss four sons and three daughters. The entire community sympathize with the bereaved relatives in this their sad affliction.

Note: maiden name was Carter, born 1845
