Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 10 Nov. 1910. Farmersburg column.

Died, at his home Monday morning, Oct. 31st, Fredrick William Mertens. He was born in the Province ox Saxony, Germany, June 24th, 1831, and came to America in 1867, settling in Farmersburg Township, where he has since resided. On November 20th, 1870, he was united in marriage to Marie Wegner. He leaves leaves to mourn his passing, a wife and one son. Funeral services were held at the German Lutheran church, Thursday morning at 10:30 o'clock, Rev. E. Pett, officiating. Burial in Farmersburg cemetery.
