Thomas David Bachtell was born in Chester Co., Penn., Nov. 23, 1840, and died at his home in National, Iowa, Sept. 18th, 1910, at the age of 69 years, 10 months and 25 days.
When 14 years of age he came with his folks to National, Clayton County, Iowa, from where they moved to Boardman township.
On his birthday, Nov. 23rd, 1862, he was united in marriage to Adelia Ingraham, of Volga City, in Reade township. to this union ten children were born: George, of Elkader; Ed., of Seattle, Wash.; Charles, of McGregor; Elmer, of Arlington; Ernest, of Giard; Harry, who died in infancy; Vernon, of McGregor; Raymond, of Vancouver,B.C.; Leafie (perhaps the name is Leafle), of Cedar Rapids; and Warner, at home.
His departure is also mourned by his aged, grief-stricken wife and faithful companion, with whom he has shared happiness and days of sunshine, as well as sorrow and days of sickness and affliction for almost 48 years. Besides those mentioned he leaves 26 grandchildren; 4 brothers and 3 sisters, he having been the oldest of a family of ten children.
At the age of 24 years he enlisted under Captain Reade in Co. C. 12th Iowa Infantry, and faithfully served served this country for almost one year.
Volga was his home until 1890, when he moved to National, where he has lived ever since.
By his death the aged wife has lost a faithful companion, the children a loving father, the friends and neighbors a kind and helping friend. Peace be to him.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Franke, of Elkader, at the house at National, yesterday morning, at 8:45 a.m., and the remains escorted to Volga for interment in the cemetery at that place.
