Added by S. Ferrall:

Horace P. Talcott was born at Madison, Ohio, April 9th, 1835. He was married to Elizabeth Kemp, July 5th, 1857. They came to Iowa in the spring of '58 and settled in Putman Township, Fayette county where they resided 42 years, removing to Strawberry Point in 1901.

A half century of married life was completed in July 1907 which was honored by the gathering of relatives in a fitting celebration of the happy event. His good wife, the sharer of the toils and joys and sorrows of life has preceded him a year to the better land.

Three children came to bless the union of these two hearts. Fred A., Bert, and Mertie (now Mrs. Geo. Dexter) all being present at the funeral together with Miss Katie Overton and Mrs. Bessie Hageman, who have been members of the family since early childhood.

The life of Mr. Talcott was not all one of peace. He heard the call of his country in the year 1862 enlisting in Co. B., 21st Iowa Infantry in which he served until mustered out June 5th, 1865. He served with his company and shared in the stirring scenes of the battles of Hartsville, Mo., Ft. Gibson, Champion Hill, Black River Bridge, Siege of Vicksburg, Jackson, Spanish Fort, Mobile and Blakely.
Twice was he almost overtaken by the enemy's deadly balls. At the siege of Vicksburg a wooden box was shot to splinters before his face. At the charge of Black River Bridge a bullet lodged in the sole of his shoe which upon examination was found to have done deadly work upon some other unfortunate soldier before it reached him.

Returning from the carnage of war and battles and hospital, he resumed the peaceful pursuit of the farmer until failing strength under the weight of years and hard service compelled him to turn the farm over to stronger hands.

Mr. Talcott was perhaps not very extraordinary in his every day life, just an average citizen, possessed of those human traits common to men. Being a pioneer in a new country, he shared with the companion of his pilgrimage through this world the privilege of ministering with neighborly kindness to the sick or needy who needed a helping hand in hours of discouragement. Men said of him, "He is a good neighbor," an expression that means much more than appears on the surface.

He peacefully fell asleep at his home June 22nd, 1910, at the age of 3 score and 15 years, leaving behind him evidence that he hoped to meet the beloved ones already passed over.
