Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 26 May 1910. North McGregor column.
At his home in North McGregor, Ia., shortly after midnight Friday, May 20, 1910, after a short illness of some ten days duration, during which time all that loving hands could do to relieve suffering and restore to health failed; God, who doeth all things well, called to rest Robert W. Trewin in his 52nd year. About two weeks prior to his death, Mr. Trewin contracted a severe cold, however no particular attention was paid to this until pneumonia developed which quickly assumed a serious nature including typhoid.
Mr. Trewin was born in St. Lawrence County, New York, Feb. 6th, 1858, and shortly after attaining his manhood moved to the then "wild west" to seek his fortune, settling close to Monona, Iowa. At this place Jan. 10th, 1888, he was united in marriage to Catherine Hayes, and to bless this union six children were born, May, Laura, Nora, William, Edward and Roy, Edward dying in infancy in 1896. Mr. Trewin moved his family to North McGregor some fifteen years ago, where they lived happily until Sept. 7th, 1906, when after a lingering illness, death removed the loving wife and mother, leaving the father alone with five small children to battle life's sorrows and troubles. Though broken-hearted with the loss of his wife, he was not discouraged, and with more determination than ever, he, through the sweat of his brow, not only succeeded in keeping his family together, but provided for them all the comforts a loving father can bestow. Mr. Trewin was a man of few words, never mingling in affairs that did not concern him, and had a kind word for everyone; to know him was to love him. His honesty and uprightness can never be questioned, his life's work being charity for his neighbor, love for his family. His work is done. God rest his soul.
Besides his children, he leaves to mourn his loss, his mother, Mrs. Laura Worden, residing at Norwood, New York, who, through her extreme feebleness and old age was unable to be present to witness the last rites over her loving son.
Funeral took place at 10 a.m., Monday from St. Mary's Catholic church at McGregor, of which Mr. Trewin has been a devoted member. Rev. Father Lundon, officiated at the ceremony, his remarks being full of beautiful thoughts of the deceased; a glowing tribute to his honesty and Christianity, and sympathy for the children, who in their youth are left to fight the world. Interment took place in the McGregor cemetery, conducted by the Catholic order of Foresters, of which Mr. Trewin was a member. The flowers were many and beautiful, showing the high esteem in which he was held.
Friends from out of town who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. R. Oliver, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bartel, Miss Ellen Humphrey, of Monona; M. E. Corbett, of Mason City; Mrs. Doody and daughter, of Buelah, Iowa; Miss Martha Corbett, of Springfield, Ill.; and Mr. and Mrs. John Hayes, of Fairbanks, Iowa.
