Fred Bergman, the well-known business man from McGregor, died Saturday, May 21st. The McGregor News says:
" He was born August 4th, 1837, in Hanover, Germany. He emigrated to Johnstown, Pa., in 1851 at the age of fifteen years, and after a residence of about two years he came to LaCrosse, Wis., in 1853. Here he was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Daubenberger, October 20th, 1857, and to this union were born ten children, two of whom preceded him in death. Mrs. Bergman preceded her husband, having passed away August 15th, 1894, after a married life of thirty-seven years.
The family came to McGregor in the year 1846 and have since made their home. Here Mr. Bergman had been in business for 46 years and all the time during his long illness he conducted his business affairs. About sixteen years ago he retired from the butcher business, but he was always a busy man, having something on hand all the time.
There remain to mourn his loss beside a host of friends, his sons Edward, Frank C., Albert, Ernest and William, and his daughters, Mrs. J. A. Walter, Miss Mae and Charlotte Bergman, and numerous grandchildren. A sister of the deceased, Mrs. Mary Fox, still resides at Johnstown, Pa., and a brother Henry at Livermore, Pa.
Services were held at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. A. Walter, Rev. S. T. Kidder, of the Congregational church officiating. The floral offerings were beautiful. He was laid to rest in the Pleasant Grove cemetery by the side of his wife. He being an old resident, there was a large concourse of friends and neighbors in attendance to pay their last respects."
