Helena Mary Berns, the daughter of John Bernard and Mary (Egelseder) Voss, was born September 20, 1889 at Guttenberg, Iowa. She was baptized in the Kann Church, rural Guttenberg. She received her education in the rural school near her parents farm and St. Mary's Parochial School.
On February 6, 1918, she was united in marriage to Linus Berns at St. Mary's. To this marriage a daughter Rose Marie was born.
She was a homemaker and a member of St. Patrick's Rosary Society. In 1945 she and Linus moved to Monona, where she resided until 1969.
Lena died Wednesday, February 15, 1984 at the Good Samaritan Center in Postville, Iowa having reached the age of 94 years, 4 months, 25 days.
Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband Linus, who died November 12, 1968, a brother Ben Voss and a sister Anna Felder.
Surviving is her daughter, Mrs. Leo (Rose Marie) Vlazny, Monona, a grandson Joe, granddaughter Mary Ann and great-grandson Jeremy.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, February 18, 1984 at St. Patrick's Church, Monona with Father John Moran officiating. Honorary pallbearers were Herbert Lenth, Vern Haberichter, Leonard Schissel. Pallbearers were Lawrence Stroschein, Anthony Voss, Joe Berns, Paul Buerger, Hubert Berns, Arthur Walz.
Burial was at St. Patrick's Cemetery. Schultz's Funeral Home was in charge of services.
