He, with twenty-five others, T. M. Davidson being one of them, enlisted Nov. 12th, 1861, at Elkader, in Co. F. 16th U.S. Infantry. Mr. Bente was severely wounded on the second day of the battle of Shiloh, and this wound bothered him to the day of his death.

The funeral will be held next Friday afternoon, from the house at 1:00 o'clock, then to the German church, at Elkader. The interment will be in the East Side cemetery.

The members of Boardman Post, G.A.R., and old soldiers are requested to meet at Commander T. M. Davidson's office at 1:15 Friday afternoon to accompany our deserving comrade's remains to their last resting place on earth. Our ranks are being diminished by disease and death, but let us do our duty to a fallen comrade as long as we can.

Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 05 May 1910.

The subject of this sketch, Wm. Bente, who died Tuesday evening, April 26th, at his home in Cox Creek township, was born in Hanover, Germany, August 1_th, 1842. With his parents he came to America in 1842, they coming to this county and locating on a farm in Cox Creek.

At the age of 18 years, William, with his brothers, Henry and Herman, came to Elkader and with twenty-three others enlisted for service in the Civil War, They entered Co. F. 16th U.S. Infantry. In one of the first battles Henry was killed, and at Shiloh William was seriously injured and on this account was discharged. Later Mr. Bente enlisted in Co. I. 8th Iowa Cavalry and served until August 1865. During his service with the 8th Iowa he was captured and was sixty-two days in prison at Moscow, Georgia, and twelve days at Richmond.

At the close of the war he settled on a farm in Cox Creek township, and in 1867 was united in marriage with Margueretta Cress. This union was blessed with eleven children, of whom ten survive: Henry, of Read, married to Ida Miller; Louis, of Elkader, married to Ida Dahling; George, of Boardman twp., married to Mary Scheer; Frank, of this township, married to Lena __eer; Mary Altschall, of Minneapolis, Minn; Anna, now Mrs. Ed Meese, of Littleport; Ida, now Mrs. John Miller, of A___n, Ill. (possibly Alton); and Michael, Katie and Lizzie, at home. Besides the wife and these children he is survived by two brothers, Herman and Louis, and one sister, Mrs. Henry Wistrick, of Cox Creek twp., and eighteen grandchildren.

He was a worthy citizen, a good soldier, and devoted to his wife and family, who mourn his loss.

The funeral was held Friday afternoon, services being held at the German church by Rev. Franke. After the services at the church the procession, lead by members of Boardman Post G.A.R., of which Mr. Bente was a member, moved to the East Side cemetery, where the G.A.R. service was given by Commander T. M. Davidson. Mr. Davidson was a member of Mr. Bente's company in the war and his feelings nearly overcome him as he spoke, mentioning that he had taken part in the service at the grave of William's brother Henry. The services at the church and at the grave were largely attended. May our comrade rest in peace.
