William Lewis died at his home in Volga City, Ia., Wednesday evening April 22, 1891, aged 69 years, 2 months and 5 days. He had been sick about five weeks with la grippe and for several days before his death was thought to be improving, but Wednesday evening he sank peacefully to rest.
Mr. Lewis was a native of Deumalbin, Lanarkshire, Scotland, where he was born Feb. 17, 1822. His marriage with Agnes Sloan took place Jan. 14, 1848, and the following year they came to America, locating in Elgin, Ill.; then they moved to Highland Twp., Clayton Co., Iowa.
This was their home for many years but last summer they came to Volga to live in ease and quiet their remaining days, but the home is broken up and the wife is left to go on alone for a few years, but she has much to comfort her, the assurance of that blessed reunion in the other home more beautiful than any in this world.
Mr. Lewis was a christian gentleman, a member of the Presbyterian church. By his death, a wife, nine children - seven sons and two daughters - and a great many friends are left to mourn for him.
Interment was made Friday afternoon; the funeral service was conducted by Rev. Ensign and was very largely attended.
