After the war he located in Clayton county, Iowa, and engaged in the wagon business, in which he continued until 1871, when he settled on a farm in Eden township, Sac county.

He was right of way agent for the Northwestern Railroad company when this line was built and the village of Schaller, in this county, was named in honor of him.

Mr. Schaller was married in October 1865, to Miss Emeline L. Knight, of Clayton county, Iowa, who died several years ago. He was later married to Mrs. Catherine Fishman, who, with his two daughters, Mrs. F.S. Needham of Sac City, and Mrs. F.P. Hartman, of Lake View, survive him.

Mr. Schaller was delegate at large to the republican national convention at St. Louis in 1896. At one time he was department commander of the G.A.R. of Iowa. Among the important offices which he held in this county were county supervisor, county treasurer and a member of the Twenty-first general assembly of Iowa. For two terms he was mayor of Sac City. He was one of the organizers of Sac City institute and for many years one of its trustees. Mr. Schaller was a member of Rose Croix commandery No. 38 K.T. and the Des Moines consistory and of the shrine and was grand treasurer of the grand lodge of A.F. and A.M. of Iowa.
