John Wenz was born at S_ellingen, Baden, Aug. 12th, 1824. He came to America in 1855, and after spending one year in the state of New Jersey and another in St. Louis, Mo., he came to Clayton county, where he was married to Magdalene Stemmer in 1860. They settled on a farm in Volga township.
About thirteen years ago the deceased became blind and also suffered from the lingering disease of dropsy. All these years the best of care was given him by his faithful companion until death relieved him from all his sufferings. He died Tuesday, March 1st, at 3:00 o'clock in the morning, at the age of 85 years, 6 months and 19 days.
He is survived by his aged wife, four daughters and 16 grandchildren. The daughters are: Mrs. Ed. Hilgendorf, of Elk. twp.; Mrs. Chas. Russell, of Mound City, S.D.; Mrs. John Ehrhardt, of Boardman twp.; and Mrs. Jos. Kramer, of Elkader.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the German church, Rev. Franke officiating. The remains were laid to rest in the East Side cemetery.
