Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 17 Dec. 1914.

Selden Bailey was born in Armada, Mich., May 6th, 1827, and died at Elkader, Iowa, Dec. 7th, 1914, aged 87 years, 7 months and one day. He was united in marriage to Lydia S. Hough, at Bosrah, Conn. To this union were born six children, three of whom survive him: Mrs. Edwin Smith, of Oelwein, who was unable to attend the funeral; Mrs. Murwin Drew, of Blair, Oklahoma, and Mrs. Wm. Smith, of Portland, Oregon. Later he married Mary A. Potter, of Volga, Iowa, Sept. 3rd, 1881. To this union three children were born, of which only one, Mrs. Carl Martin, of Elkader, Iowa, survives him, who has made her home with him, and who, with his faithful and devoted wife, were at his bedside when the summons came.

He took a stand for Christ when a young man and always has been found faithful and true to his Lord and Master. He was always ready to do a kind deed for any and everyone and had many kind friends who were appreciated. About twenty-four years ago he moved from the Voshell neighborhood to what is now known as Bailey Ridge, where he was the means of a schoolhouse being started, also a Sunday School, of which he was Superintendent for years. He was a patient sufferer with heart trouble and asthma for years but never complained. He was ready to go to his Savior and of him could be said by his Master, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things. I will make thee ruler over many things; enter thou into the joy of thy Lord."

He leaves to mourn his departure his loving and faithful wife, four daughters, four brothers-in-law (sons-in-law ??), thirteen grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren besides a host of kind friends.

Funeral services were held from the home at 9:00 Wednesday morning and the remains were taken to the Presbyterian church at Volga, Rev. Roberts officiating. Burial in the Volga cemetery.
