Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 10 Dec. 1914. Littleport column.

It has become our sad duty to chronicle the death of an old friend, J. W. Meyer, of Communia, who died at his home there last Thursday, Dec. 3rd, after an illness extending over the past year and a half, and during which time he was a patient sufferer, hopeful until the latter part of his illness that he would some time regain his health. John was born near Osborne, Iowa, on Nov. 1st, 1875, and was at the time of his demise 39 years, one month and three days old. His sterling qualities brought him many friends, who, in a way, tried to express their sympathy and feeling toward him and his family by attending the funeral, which was held Sunday at the home, burial taking place at Elkader under the auspices of the Masonic order, to which he belonged. John was too well known hereabouts for further comment on our part and all we can add is that the community has lost a good and worthy member through death and his family a kind and dutiful son and brother. The entire community extend their sympathy to the bereaved family.

Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 17 Dec. 1914.

John W. Meyer, one of Clayton County's sterling young men passed away at his home in Communia on Thursday evening, December 3rd, at 11 o'clock, after a struggle of some two years and a half, with that dread disease, cancer.

Mr. Meyer was born on the old home farm, in Cox Creek township, November 1st, 1875, and was just in the prime of life. About fifteen years ago the family moved to Communia and purchased the store at that place and he faithfully performed the duties which fell to him, both in the store and on the farm. After his father's death, some fourteen years ago, he took up the management of the business and has conducted it ably, assisted by his mother and sisters. He was always genial and accommodating and his honesty and integrity was recognized by all who had any dealing with him.

During the past two years the disease of which he was a victim made him give up much of his work, but through it all he was cheerful and patient, anxious to be as helpful as possible. His devoted Mother and sisters gave him the best of care, but neither the efforts of loved ones or medical skill were availing.

He is mourned by his aged mother, Mrs. Emma Meyer, and the following brothers and sisters: August, of Belden, Nebr.; Frank, of Nunica, Mich.; Herman, of Cox Creek township; Carl, of Armour, S.D.; Joe, of Des Moines, Iowa; Mrs. Anna Burgholzer, of Chicago, Ill.; Mrs. Tillie Dohrer, of Cox Creek township, and Emma and Mary at home. One brother, Willie, precede him in death about seventeen years ago and another brother, George, died five years ago. Besides those nearest to him he leaves other relatives and many friends, who will miss him greatly in days to come.

The funeral services were held in the Congregational church of this place and were in charge of the Elkader lodge No. 72, A.F. & A.M., of which he was a member. Rev. Franke preached the sermon, giving one of his excellent addresses. He was laid to rest in the East Side cemetery.
