Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 29 Oct. 1914.

After several weeks of severe sickness Mrs. Hall, so favorably known to our town and neighborhood, passed away to her heavenly reward at the home of her daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Voshell, Friday afternoon of last week.

Mrs. Lavina Isabelle Hitchcock Hall was born in Canada February 11th, 1840, and died Oct. 23rd, 1914, aged 74 years eight months and 12 days. Her mother died when she was three years old, leaving with her three sisters and two brothers. She came to the States when she was young and on Nov. 28th, 1858, she was married to James Hall at Wadena, where they settled down on a farm and lived most of their married life.

To this happy union were born four sons and two daughters. Three of them have preceded their mother to the land beyond.

Nearly seventeen years ago she was called upon to give up her beloved husband, who died Nov. 30th, 1897. It was a great bereavement to her but she found strength and comfort in God, who was her refuge and strength in the hour of sorrow.

When about eighteen years of age Mrs. Hall was converted to God, baptized and united with the Baptist church of Wadena, where her membership still remains. She loved her church and was an active worker in the same. For some years she was a Sunday School teacher and was devoted to the study of God's word and the progress of the Sunday School work. Since the writer has been at Volga he has met her frequently in the divine services and she was an eager listener to God's word. But in the past few months, because of sickness and infirmities, she was kept at her home. She was a Christian woman of deep religious convictions, of strong faith in God and devotion to her Saviour. She loved the Bible and it was her companion and with a hope that burned in her heart she lifted her aspirations to those mansions in the Father's house, prepared by Christ for His redeemed children.

As a mother she loved her home and her family and was devoted to their interests. As a neighbor she was beloved by her many friends for her self-sacrificing life in deeds of good and helpfulness.

In sickness she was always ready to do what she could, to speak a kind word or perform a kind deed. Surely her life has been the precious ointment of self denial for the good of others and her memory will be a sweet fragrance that will linger as the years shall come and go.

The Master has come and has called her from a suffering world to joys of heaven, from labor and toils to the rest that remaineth to the people of God. Peace to the memory of a good woman who hath "done what she could."

She leaves to mourn their loss two sons, Daniel and Ora Hall, and one daughter, Mrs. Geo. Voshell; also one sister, Mrs. Tinkham, of Seattle, Wash., nineteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Thus she rests from her labors and her works do follow her.

The services were held in the M.E. church, Volga, Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Walter Piper and Rev. Joseph Jennings assisting. The mortal remains were laid away to rest in the Volga cemetery awaiting the resurrection dawn.

"Asleep in Jesus ! Blessed sleep,
From which none ever wakes to Weep !
A calm and undisturbed repose,
Unbroken by the last of foes."
