Martha E. Atwood, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alexander B. Atwood, was born in Read township, Clayton County, Iowa, March 24th, 1862, and died at Clarinda, Iowa, on the morning of September 5th, 1914, after an illness of several years duration, at the age of 52 years, 5 months and 12 days.
On November 23rd, 1882, she was united in marriage with John W. Stoops, and to this union were born three children, Curtis A., of Los Angeles, Calif.; John W., of Read township; and Sadie, now Mrs. Fred H. Griswold, of Waterloo, Iowa.
Besides her three children she leaves to mourn her loss three little grandchildren, Malcom and Burnell Stoops, of Read township, and Nita May Griswold, of Waterloo; her aged mother, Mrs. Sarah J. Atwood, and two sisters, Mrs. Al Cook and Mrs. John Toutsch, all being residents of Elkader, and one brother, Alva Atwood, of City Point, Wis., besides many friends. Her father, one brother and a sister have preceded her in death and by her request she was laid to rest by their side in the Patterson cemetery, in Wagner township.
Funeral services were held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Al. Cook, in this city, at two o'clock on Tuesday afternoon, Rev. C. H. Franke officiating.
Leaves have their time to fall,
And flowers to wither at the north
winds breath,
And stars to set - but all
Thou has all reasons for thine own,
O Death !
