Maria I., daughter of Agustus and Olive Axtell, was born Feb. 29th, 1849, in Amherst Lorain county, Ohio. In 1863 the deceased came with her parents to Iowa and settled on what is known as the "Blanchard farm", two miles east of Strawberry Point, where she spent her girlhood days. She later became a school teacher, and taught for a number of years, two terms of which time as a teacher in the suburbs of Chicago. On Oct. 4th, 1871, she was united in marriage to F. P. Richardson; from which union was born June 2nd, 1881, a daughter Ethel, who died March 24th, 1883. In 1874 Mr. and Mrs. Richardson settled on a farm three miles east of Strawberry Point, where they continued to reside until her husbands death, which occurred August 25th, 1906. On Feb. 6th, 1911, she was married to A. R. Carrier, of Strawberry Point. Soon after her marriage she received a stroke of paralysis, from which she never recovered. For the past three years Mrs. Carrier has been a most patient sufferer, and to her the Angel of death was a most welcome visitor. She passed away at the home in Strawberry Point, March 24th, 1914. E. and Arthur, of Cohasset, Minn.; E. K., of Trent, S.D.; and H. A. Axtell, of Strawberry Point, Iowa, beside a host of friends to whom she had endeared herself by her genial nature and Christian spirit. The funeral service was held at the residence Saturday, March 28th at 10:30 a.m., Rev. A. A. Wood, pastor of the Congregational church officiating. Interment in the Strawberry Point cemetery.
