The news of the death of Patrick Connell at Prairie du Chien early Saturday morning came as a surprise to Elkader people who had not known that he was ill. About a week before Pat stepped on a hoop which sprang up and striking him on the shin produced a slight abrasion to which he paid but little attention until the Monday following when it was discovered that blood poisoning had set in. He was taken to the hospital and an operation performed, but it was too late and death ensued on Saturday morning.

Patrick Connell was born April 2, 1860, in Read township, this county. When a boy of twelve years he left home and for years about the country. Some six years since he returned to this section and spent a year in Elkader, since then he has been in the saloon business at Prairie du Chien. About a month ago he was in Elkader to visit his mother who was dangerously ill.

He was a brother of Jas. Connell and Mrs. Jas Foran, of Read twp., and Mrs. M. Fitzpatrick, of this place.

The remains were brought to Elkader Saturday evening and taken to the residence of Jas Foran in Read twp. The funeral was held at Garnavillo on Monday.
