Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 26 Mar. 1914. Monona column.
The community was shocked on last Saturday afternoon when it was announced that Michael Kane had died, after a very short illness, which led to heart failure. Mr. Kane was born in Limerick, Ireland, in 1846, and with his parents came to America when very young, settling in Ohio, where they remained for a short time. They then came west and located in McGregor, Iowa. A few years later he moved on a farm two miles north of Monona, where he has since resided. In 1899 he was united in marriage with Miss Mary Tierney. Three children were born to this union: Mae, Michael and John, who, with their mother, survive him. The funeral was held from St. Patrick's church, Monona, on Tuesday at 10 o'clock a.m. Burial in the Catholic cemetery at Monona. The honorary pall-bearers were Thos. English, Richard Humphrey, N. Melcher, John Grady, Patrick Grady and John O'Leary. The active pall-bearers were Joseph Wagner, Cam Rowland, David Hall, Alex Killen, Frank Steele and Sam Arnold. The out of town relatives present were two nephews, Mr. Murray, of Beloit, Wis., and Joseph Kane, of Omaha, Neb.; also two nieces, Mrs. Alice Davies and Mrs. Margaret Cummings, of Chicago. A brother, Patrick Kane, of Omaha, and a sister, Mrs. Catherine Murray, of Beloit, Wis., were unable to attend because of illness.
