Leland Galusha Tanner was born in West Schuyler, N.Y., on March 4, 1838, and died at the home of his daughter in Prairie du Chien, Wis., March 9th, 1914, aged 76 years and five days. He was left an orphan at the early age of five years, was given a home with his grandparents until his 16th year. Since which time he has made his own way in the world. He was married to Helen Smith Oct. 1st, 1861. To this union was given seven children, Gardner, who died in infancy; George, of Parma, Idaho; Elizabeth, (Mrs. J. K. Green) deceased; Frank, of Hampton, Iowa; Gordon, of Miles City, Mont.; Howard, of Chester S.D.; and Mary, of Prairie du Chien, Wis. He came to Iowa in 1864, locating at Monona, since which time he has followed many kinds of work, but a greater part of his wedded life has been spent on the farm. Seven years ago he suffered a paralytic stroke, and since then has been an invalid. Five years ago he left the farm and went to make his home with his only living daughter, where he has been cared for with the tenderest of love. At her home in Prairie du Chien, they celebrated their Golden Wedding on Oct. 1, 1911. Four weeks ago he was taken worse and on Monday morning, March 9th, he was called home to his Heavenly Father. Three of his sons, Frank, Gordon and Howard, were with him during his last illness and helped the mother and sister to care for him. He was ever a kind and loving husband and father, a kind and accommodating friend and neighbor. Besides his faithful, loving wife he leaves five children and six grandchildren.
