Another old settler has gone in the person of Mr. John Schmeiser. He was born in the Kingdom of Bavaria, Germany in the year of our Lord, 1821.

In the early '50's he came to Clayton County, Iowa, and located near Watson. He was a carpenter by trade, but he saw the advantages of farm life, and engaged in it and together with his family, they accumulated quite a nice home and real estate.

He died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 1899 about 6:20 pm. His age was [illegible]. His two daughters Lizzie and Emma preceded him to eternity.

His wife and two sons, Loui and John are left to mourn his departure.

His funeral took place on Friday, Dec. 22, in the Watson frame church. Rev. Wm. Pfefferkorn officiating. His remains were buried in Watson's Cemetery.

Through THE LEADER we the undersigned, wish to express our sincere thanks to all the friends and neighbors for their assistance in our time of need.
Mrs. John Schmeiseer, Loui and John Schmeiser

~Monona Leader, Thursday, December 28, 1899

Note: The Watson cemetery is aka Council Hill cemetery.
