Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 29 Jan. 1914. Garnavillo column.
Erwin Carl Christian Winkler, a resident of this township, died Wednesday morning at 7:20 at his home one mile west of town. Death was due to pneumonia, complicated with a weak heart. His condition was critical from the start but the announcement of his death was a shock to all.
The deceased was born on Jan. 15, 1880, in Garnavillo township, the eldest son of Joseph and Emma Wirkler. At the age of five years he entered the public school and was a most diligent scholar. When thirteen years of age he was confirmed by Rev. Dickhoff. After his confirmation he continued his high school work and in 1895 graduated with high honors under the tutorship of Jacob Mauer. He also spent one year as a student at Epworth Seminary. In 1907 he was married to Emma Dettmer and settled on a farm where he lived until his death. One child, Walter Heinrich Joseph, blessed this union.
He leaves to mourn his untimely death, his wife and son, his parents, four brothers and two sisters, Alfred, Harvey, Herbert and Carrie, at home; Mrs. Henry Kaiser, of Farmersburg township, and Helmuth, of San Jose, Cal., besides a host of relatives and friends.
He was greatly admired, for his nobility of character and his honesty. Because of these qualities he has held various positions of trust. He acted as Secretary of the School Board, as Township Clerk and for the past seven years has been Secretary of the Creamery Company. The Turn Verein, of which he was a member, escorted the funeral cortege to its final resting place. Burial services were conducted on Sunday by Rev. Braun at the house and church thence to the new cemetery. The church was filled with sympathizing friends, who came to pay a tribute of love for their departed friend.
