Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 31 Dec. 1908. Local News columns.

Edmond Cory Gifford, son of Rev. Henry and Lucetta Gifford, was born in Read township, April 16th, 1853, and after a lingering illness was stricken with paralysis Sunday morning. On Tuesday, December 22nd, 1908, the merciful Father relieved his suffering.

On Jan. 9th, 1877, he was married to Mary A. Munger. To them were born Lucetta Flavin, of Austin, Minn., Edwyna Perry, of St. Olaf, Iowa, Adella Hinsch, of Farmersburg, Iowa, and Miss Ruth at home. The pride of his heart was his five little grandchildren. He also leaves two brothers, William W., of Long Beach, Cali., and Gideon M., of this city.

The early part of his life was spent on the old home farm. Fifteen years ago he became a resident of Elkader, where for six years he has been proprietor of the Osborne stage line, where he has gained and retained many friends.

The past twenty-three years he has also achieved a wide reputation as an auctioneer.

A kind and loving friend has left us and the whole community is saddened thereby. It is sad that the family circle must be broken at Christmas time when other years they have met to enjoy the happy occasion. But when we think of the great rejoicing in Heaven that comes at this time of the year we know that he is happy in his new home.

All that loving hands could do was done to make his last days pleasant. He leaves many friends who sympathize deeply with the sorrowing family.

The funeral, one of the largest ever held at Elkader, was held at the Congregational church Tuesday morning under the auspices of the I.O.O.F., as was the wish of the deceased, assisted by the M.W.A. and Sisters of Rebekah.
