At the residence of his son John in Boardman township on Friday, Nov. 27th, occurred the death of another of our old settlers, John Ehrhardt, Sr., at the age of 86 years, 8 months and 14 days.
Mr. Ehrhardt was born in the province of Saxony, Germany, March 13, 1822. He came to America in 1852 and for six years resided in the city of New York, where in 1855 he was united in marriage with Henriette Kaiser. To them were born eight children, three of whom died in infancy.
In 1858 Mr. Ehrhardt, with his family, came to Clayton county and have since resided in this township. Mrs. Ehrhardt passed to the great beyond in 1895.
The surviving children are Charles of Boardman township; Mrs. L. Mayfield of Cox Creek township; John and Mrs. J. J. Kuehl of Boardman township; and George of Elkader. He is also survived by 21 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and a sister, Mrs. J. Wolf of Marion, N.Y.
Mr. Ehrhardt has visited his native land three times since he became a citizen of the United States, in 1885, 1888 and 1894.
He was a jovial large hearted man and by his industry had secured a competency for himself and those dependent upon him.
The funeral services were held on Sunday last at his late home and at the Congregational church, Revs. C. H. Franke and J. G. Dickey conducting the services. The last sad rites were attended by a very large concourse of friends who came to pay their respect to a departed friend and neighbor. The interment was in the East Side cemetery.
