Added by S. Ferrall 5/12/2025:
Belle York was born October 29th, 1864 at Garden Plain, Whiteside Co., Ill., and passed away Sunday April 22nd, at Marquette, Iowa.
She was the daughter of John W. and Sophronia York, and the youngest of six children: James M., who gave his life for his country in 1864; Annie E., who passed away at York's Landing in 1898; Homer J., who was killed in a runaway in 1904, and Captain William York who passed away a Rock Island in 1922.
She is survived by one brother, Joseph M., with whom she has made her home.
At the age of two years she contracted scarlet fever, which left her deaf and dumb, and being of a retiring disposition, has caused her to lead a lonely life. However she bore her affliction patiently.
For many years before moving to Marquette, the family lived at York's Landing four miles north of Marquette, which has been a well known landmark of the Mississippi for many years.
The deceased has been ill for the past six weeks with heart disease, and was a patient sufferer.
Funeral services were conducted on Monday afternoon by Rev. A.W. Gable, pastor of the M.E. church of which the deceased was a member. Interment in Pleasant Grove cemetery.
