Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 12 Nov. 1908.

In Memoriam

At her home on Saturday morning, at three o'clock, Oct. 24th, 1908, Mrs. E. M. Rathman, one of the early settlers of Elkader, passed away. The immediate cause of death was pneumonia. Although for many months she has been an invalid, having suffered from a stroke of paralysis which left her almost helpless, still death was no less a shock to her family and friends, for we never feel ready to give up those we love.

Elizabeth Mary O'Flaherty was born in Neenah, Ireland, March 5th, 1834, from whence she came to America in 1853 and resided in Philadelphia, Penn., at the home of her brother until her marriage to Fred Rathman in 1855. They lived in Carlisle, N.Y., for a short time and in Chicago, Ill., for a short time, then came to Elkader, Iowa, in 1866 where they have since resided.

Six children were born to them, two boys, who died in infancy and were buried in the east, and four girls: Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Lyman of Caledonia, Minn.; Mrs. Clara O'Meyer, of St. Paul, Minn.; Mrs. Della Lilly, of Thief River Falls, Dakota; and Mrs. Mary Ferdinand Richardson, of Elkader, Iowa. These four daughters, with the bereaved husband and eight grandchildren, survive to mourn her death.

All that loving hands could do was done and surrounded by her loved ones her spirit took its departure.

Mrs. Rathman was an adherent of the Catholic faith and on Monday morning at ten o'clock, after a brief service at her late home, the benediction was pronounced at the grave in East Side cemetery by Rev. Father Reilley.

There is no death ! The stars go down
To rise upon some fairer shore,
And bright in Heaven's jeweled crown
They shine forevermore.

There is no death ! An angel form
Walks o'er the earth with silent tread;
He bears our best loved things away
And then we call them dead.

And ever near us, though unseen,
The dear immortal spirits tread,
For all this boundless universe
Is life, there are no dead.

A Friend.
