Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 08 Oct. 1908. Monona column.

Alpheus Ernst was born in Warren, Trumbul Co., Ohio, Nov. 17, 1842, and died at the home of his son Lloyd, in Monona, Monday, Sept 28, 1908, aged 65 years, 10 months and 11 days.

At the age of 25 years, in 186_, he came to Iowa, and on Dec. 11, 1867, he was united in marriage to Miss Julia E. Scott, of Luana. To them were born four children, of whom two died in infancy; the living are Mrs. Minnie E. Bunnell, of Willoughby, Ohio, and Lloyd S. Ernst, of Monona.

Mr. Ernst, since coming to Iowa, has lived in Luana or its vicinity until about four years ago when he moved to Ipswich, S.D. There he lived for two years when he removed to Eyota, Minn. He was brought from there to Monona by his son on the 19th of this month. During the past year his health has failed rapidly and for the past month he was unable to leave his room unassisted. He has, though in poor health for many years, been a very ambitious man, even during his last sickness his eagerness to be about has needed to be repressed by physicians.

For a number of years he conducted a mercantile business in Luana, where his wife died about eight years ago. The last three years he has made his home with his son Lloyd, who has been privileged to bestow the last kind acts of ministry from a son to his aged and sick father. His daughter was also with him during the last few weeks of life.

He leaves besides a son and daughter, two brothers and four sisters, his brother, J. M. Ernst, of Luana, being present at the funeral, which was held at his son's home Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 30, conducted by Rev. B. H. Cheney. Burial in the Luana cemetery.
