Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 02 Apr. 1908.

Miranda Mercy Penhollow was born near Osterdock June 13th, 1857. Here she spent her childhood days, those happy days when the little cares and sorrows of the day are forgotten at night; when the Guardian Angel watches ever nigh, and the woes are all forgotten as the dear lips whisper "Now I lay me down to sleep. I pray the Lord my soul to keep." It was during these days that she learned to love her Savior and she was a patient bearer of the cross and a faithful follower of Christ, was a member of the United Brethren church. On March 4th, 1880, she was united in marriage to Andrew W. Purman. She was a loving wife and mother. Four children came to bless this union, three daughters and one son. Two daughters preceded them to the heavenly home. The other daughter, Ina, now Mrs. Henry Schnepf, and the son, Palmer Purman, reside at Garber. On March 22nd, 1901, the husband and father died, and she was left a widow. She enjoyed good health up to within eleven days of her death, which occurred on Tuesday, March 24th, 1908, exactly seven years after the death of her husband. She will be greatly missed by her children and other kindred and friends, but by none more than her little grandson, Kenneth Schnepf, who spent many happy hours with Grandma Purman as his playmate. Besides her children she leaves to mourn her untimely death her brothers, Lee Penhollow, of Mount Carroll, Ill., R. B. Penhollow, of Stockville, Neb., W. H. Penhollow, of Waterloo, Iowa, Ansel Penhollow, of Millville, Iowa, and Ern Penhollow, on the old homestead, and her sisters, Mrs. Helen Holzman, of Lima, Iowa, Mrs. Fred Chittenden, of Fayette, Iowa, and many relatives and friends. The Rebekah's lose a faithful member, as she was a member of Elk Valley Lodge No. 500, and performed her duties here, as in all she did with the same love and conscientiousness that she did everything which came in her path. Mourn her not as dead but as though she were "watching and waiting for your coming bye and bye." The funeral was held on Thursday, March 26th, services at the residence, Rev. Strother Hansel officiating. A large concourse of friends paid their last respect to the dead. Interment at Mount Harmony cemetery.
