Harriet Elizabeth Beatty was born April 7th, 1837, and died March 1st, 1908. She was born in Monongahela county, Virginia. When twelve years of age she came with the family to Iowa, remaining two years. She then went to Ohio, living with her grandfather about three years. She then returned with an uncle to Clayton county, Iowa, where she has since resided. She was united in marriage to John T. Porter in the year 1858, and to this union four children were born, who, with their aged father, are left to mourn her loss: G. W., of Littleport; Mrs. W. S. Wooldridge, of Arlington; James, of Osterdock; and Mrs. Jas. Beatty, of Colesburg. She also leaves one brother, Jas. Beatty, of Edgewood, and one sister, Mrs. Anna Hoover, of Pasadena, Cal., and also twelve grandchildren.

She was of a patient nature and a Christian disposition and was beloved by all who knew her. The funeral services were held from her home March 4th, at ten o'clock, Rev. DePuy, of Edgewood, officiating. Interment in the Littleport cemetery.
