Loraine was born May 3, 1923, to Wilbert and Ottilie (Roeben) Horstman, in Elkader, Iowa. He graduated from the Guttenberg High School in 1941.
From 1942 to 1945, Loraine served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a radio and morse code operator in the Pacific Theater. He was among the many young men and women who wrote letters to the Guttenberg press describing their World War II experiences.
On Jan. 11, 1946, Loraine married Lela June Nelson at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Elkader. They have three daughters, Connie, Cathy and Cindy.
From 1946-1967, Loraine and June owned and operated Horstman's Grill and "66" Service in Guttenberg. In 1969, Loraine joined United Laboratories of Addison, Ill., as an account executive. He enjoyed working with his customers, made many life-long friends and won numerous sales awards. He retired in 2000, after 31 years with United.
Loraine was a 60-year member of the American Legion, a past member of the Dubuque Kennel Club, and a life-long member of St. John's Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council and on various church committees.
At home, Loraine enjoyed his family and caring for his German shepherds. He liked quiet hours in the backyard, doing yard work and watching the seasons pass. He especially appreciated the autumn colors and waiting for the first snowfall. Loraine also enjoyed traveling, both in the U.S. and abroad. Among his favorite places were Colorado and the Pacific Northwest.
