Arlene Louise Thein, age 89 years, 7 months and 16 days old, left her earthly home to be with the Lord’s family in Heaven on January 10, 2018.
Arlene was a valiant warrior for five years in her battle with multiple myeloma, surviving unsuccessful chemo attempts, and managed well with Dr. Schultheis steadfast care and support. He often told her she was an amazing woman whose body “”90 going on 70” never shrugged or failed until a second pelvic injury and pneumonia overwhelmed her immune system and she passed of complications of multiple myeloma.

Arlene was born on May 25, 1928, in a stone house on the family farm in Miners’ Creek, the eighth child of Edgar and Augusta (Block) Handke. She had hazel eyes and dark black hair like her father, and grew tall and thin with the nickname of “Beanie” to her family. She attended Miners’ Creek Country School where she graduated at age 15.
She worked during her life at Pearl Button Shop, Muters, Clinton Pallet, Trademark as well as being a lifelong homemaker.

As a young woman, she also spent several months on an adventure living in Warren, Virginia, working and learning about the world.
Arlene returned home to her roots and married Melvin Fred Thein in the winter of 1948, and spent the rest of her life with her family in Guttenberg. She had three children, two of whom survive her.

She was a self-taught knitter, creating handmade sweaters to sell, as well as crocheting afghans for babies and beloved grandkids. Not to forget, she was an expert at pin curling hair and giving perms to her sisters when they chummed together. She also loved family card parties with Gustie and MaryAnn.

Her last years of health, she loved quilting, gardening in her and Ron’s flowerbeds, playing bingo always and ha d a special bond with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Arlene is forever mourned by her two children, Ronald Thein and Susan (Roger) Guyer, grandchildren, Steven Guyer of Garnavillo, Bradley Guyer of Blaine, Minn. & Dr. Rick Guyer of Scottsdale, AZ; great grandchildren, Megan, Jenna, Allie & Zachary Guyer of Blaine, Minn; brother, Eugene Handke of Guttenberg; sisters, Augusta (Marvin) Gloeckner of Dyersville, MaryAnn (Artie) Hoeger of Guttenberg and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Arlene is joined in heaven by her parents; Melvin in 1982; daughter Melissa Ann; siblings and family, LaVern Handke, Edgar Handke, Roland (Alberta) Handke, (Janice Miller and Merlin), Bernice and Harry Purman, Edna and Emery Hansel (Sharon Tomkins), Florence and Richie Duwe (Ronnie), Raymond Handke, Clarence Handke (Pam Tuecke).
