Grace Rose (Chappell) Sargent, 83, of Guttenberg, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, at her home in Guttenberg after a courageous battle with cancer.She was born the daughter of Joseph and Louise (Druecker) Chappell on Feb. 1, 1920, on the family farm near Strawberry Point, Iowa. Grace graduated from Strawberry Point High School. She was united in marriage with Elwin Sargent on April 12, 1939, at St. Sebold Lutheran Church near Strawberry Point. Grace and Elwin farmed in the Strawberry Point, Garnavillo and Elkader areas before moving to a farm near Guttenberg in 1958. In December 1969, they moved to town, where Grace lived until her death.
Grace farmed with her family, worked at Muters Manufacturing, then at the Guttenberg Care Center until she retired.
Those left to cherish her memory are one daughter, Mary (Robert) Carrier of Guttenberg; one son, Lyle (Alberta) Sargent of Guttenberg; five grandchildren, Dennis Sargent, Sara Noack, Michael (Chris) Carrier, Roger Carrier and Dianne Carrier; eight great-grandchildren, Tony, Jon, Drew, Reid and Gwen Carrier, Matthew, Mark and Grace Rose Noack; four sisters-in-law, Jewell Chappell, Marjorie Chappell, Vione Brooks and Evelyn Franck; one brother-in-law, Irvin Hansel; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one sister, Lena Harvey; and three brothers, Glenn Chappell, George Chappell and Joseph (Gene) Chappell. Arrangements are being handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 207 S. First St., Guttenberg, where the family will receive friends from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday. Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, St. John's Lutheran Church, Guttenberg, by the Rev. Harold McMillin. Burial: Guttenberg City Cemetery.
