GUTTENBERG, Iowa - Howard John Duwe, 90, of Guttenberg, died Monday, Nov. 5, 2012, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque.Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Guttenberg, with the Rev. David Zimmer officiating. Interment will be at the Guttenberg City Cemetery. Friends may call after 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 207 S. First, Guttenberg, is in charge of arrangements.
He was born on Oct. 22, 1922, on the home farm north of Guttenberg, son of Larry and Mathilda (Sadewasser) Duwe. He received his education from the country school just west of the home farm.
In his younger days, Howard owned his own truck and would haul buttons to Washington, Iowa, for the Button Factory. He also hauled cream for the creamery for many of the local farmers and moved people from place to place while doing many odd jobs. After Howard sold his truck, he worked for Meuser Lumber Company until his retirement. In his retirement, Howard planted many potatoes, at least 100 pounds each year, which he gave some away to friends. He was very particular about how they were planted and you were told so if you weren't doing it right.
On June 7, 1944, Howard was united in marriage to Berdina Troester. This union blessed them with two children, Denise and Darwin.
Howard loved music, especially playing the drums. He was in three local bands, The Peanuts, Arnie and Howie and Keith Willman and Country Key Boards.
Surviving are his daughter, Denise (Lyle) Moser, of Guttenberg; two grandchildren, Tammy (Dave) Kickbush, of Guttenberg, and Lee (Rachel) Moser, of Waukon; four great-grandchildren, Preslie and Madelyn Moser, Alex and Carlie Hyde; two brothers, Duwane (Eldora) Duwe, of Guttenberg, and Curt (Pat) Duwe, of Marion; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 63 years, Berdina; a son, Darwin; and sister, Dorene Walters.
