Elkader Register - July 6, 1883:

"On Tuesday, June 26th the angel of death entered into the home of William Sullivan, Guttenberg, and took there from one of its brightest ornaments, his daughter Melvina. Deceased was a victim of that dread disease, consumption, and was cut off in the full bloom of life. Her death will be sincerely mourned by all who knew her, for she was beloved by all. The funeral, which occurred on the 28th, was very largely attended, which attests better than words, the esteem in which she was held by her companions.
