The May 16, 1884 Clayton paper stated: "The many Elkader friends of Mr. William Sullivan, merchant at Guttenberg, will be pained to learn of the death of Mrs. Sullivan, which sad event occurred on Tuesday last at the family residence in Guttenberg. Mrs. Sullivan, at the time of her death was 55 years of age. Last June the eldest daughter of the family died, and since that time Mrs. Sullivan has been ill. The grief at the loss of her daughter superinduced a lung affection from which the good woman never recovered. She was a warm-hearted christian woman, and during her long residence in Guttenberg was held in high esteem by the entire community. She died fortified by the last rites of the Catholic church, of which church she was a devout and life-time member. The funeral occurred on Thursday, at one o'clock, and was very largely attended."
