Clayton County Register, Thur., 25 Aug. 1927. Guttenberg column.
The death of Leo J. Fest, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Fest of Guttenberg, occurred on August 16, at the home of his parents in this city, at the age of 19 years, five months and eight days, after a short illness, the cause of his death being acute dilatation of the heart, and his almost sudden death came as a shock to the entire community, as Leo was held in high regard by all who knew him. On the morning of August 15th he underwent an operation, having had his tonsils removed, and was getting along nicely. On the afternoon of August 16th he suffered an attack of dilatation of the heart, which caused his death. Deceased was born at Guttenberg, Iowa, on March 8, 1908, where he attended school and grew to young manhood. In the year 1926 he graduated from St. Mary's high school here, after which he attended Columbia College at Dubuque, and had made arrangements to return to Columbia College in September to continue his studies. Leo was an ambitious young man of a pleasing personality which won for him many friends during life, by whom his memory will be forever cherished. All was done for him that could be done to save his life, but all to no avail. His parents, one sister, Editha M. Fest of Dubuque, and one brother, Gerald G. Fest at home, and numerous other relatives and friends deeply mourn his untimely death, and he will be sadly missed by all. In his death this community loses one of its most worthy and highly respected young men. Funeral services were held at St. Mary's Catholic church in this city on Friday morning, Rev. Joseph Dupont officiating. Interment was made in Mt. Olivet cemetery. The funeral was largely attended by relatives and friends from far and near, which showed that deceased was held in the highest regard by all who knew him.
