Lonny D. Suddendorf, 68, of Abilene, Texas formerly of Monona, Iowa died Sunday, August 25, 2019 at Hendrick Medical Center, Abilene, Texas.

Lonny Dean was born on January 14, 1951 to Kenneth and Mardella (Aulerich)Suddendorf in Monona, Iowa. After high school graduation, Lonny joined and served in the United States Air Force. He served as a Fuels Supervisor for the entirety of his 20-year Air Force career.

After his divorce in 1991 from Penny George, Lonny was stationed at Wurtsmith Air Force Base in Michigan. He retired from the Air Force in 1994.

For six weeks every year, Lonny looked forward to seeing his boys, Ashley and Whitney, and taking them on long camping trips to various National Parks.

In 2012, Lonny needed a prosthetic vertebra and required care following his surgery. His son, Ashley came to live with and care for him. Lonny did receive some assistance from an in-house care attendant once he turned 65 and it provided some welcome company for him.

When he was able, Lonny would wake up every morning, watch Regis and KathyLee, turn the stove on low and put a few pieces of bacon in a cast iron skillet. Lonny would then go on a short walk. After his walk, he would finish his breakfast by making a cheese omelet and listening to the news and radio shows on National Public Radio. In the evenings, Lonny would wait until 5:00 pm to begin drinking his favorite beer, Budweiser. He always watched the evening news and would listen to the radio again until the late-night talk shows began. He enjoyed watching David Letterman and Craig Ferguson until they went off the air, then it was American Dad and CSI that he watched.

Lonny was a compulsive time keeper, when he traveled, he would use a stopwatch and log the data from spot to spot. He even kept separate times while traveling and while stopped. When he was younger, Lonny’s favorite things to do included riding motorcycle and listening to rock music while drinking with his buddies.

Lonny is survived by his two sons; Ashley Suddendorf of Abilene, Texas and Whitney Suddendorf of Middleton, Wisconsin; and siblings, Larry (Karen) Suddendorf of Monona, Iowa and Judy Suddendorf of Burnsville, Minnesota.

Graveside Service with Military Rites will be at 1:00 pm on Thursday, September 5, 2019 at Monona Cemetery, Monona, Iowa with Rev. Erika Kielstrup as the Officiant.
