Clayton County Register, Thur., 14 July 1927.
Elizabeth Hays Jack was born in Brooke County, Virginia, September 24th, 1832. She died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Herbert Renshaw, at Inwood, Iowa, July 12th, 1927, at the age of 94 years, 9 months and 18 days. Funeral services were held at National, Wednesday, where interment took place, Rev. A. S. Kilbourn officiating. Eastern Star Chapter No. 152 of which she was a member, conducted their impressive service.
Mrs. Jack was the daughter of Enoch and Nancy (Marshall) Hays. On February 9, 1854, she was united in marriage with James Jack, and in April, 1856, they moved to National, Iowa, where they resided until 1877, when they moved to Elkader. Mrs. Jack was one of the pioneer settlers of Clayton county, and made her home in Elkader for nearly fifty years. After the death of her husband in 1885, she made her home with her son, S. V. Jack, until his death in 1922, when she went to live with her daughter, Mrs. Herbert Renshaw at Inwood, Iowa. Here she remained until her death.
She leaves to mourn her death one son, Levi Miller Jack of Waucoma, and one daughter, Mrs. Herbert Renshaw of Inwood, also eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Her husband James Jack, five sons, David Hays, Orlando Willis, Horace Wilson, Clarence Clifton and Samuel Vernon; one daughter, Ruby Fern Jack, and one great-granddaughter, Ruby Joy Christensen, preceded her to the Great Beyond.
She was a charter member of the Congregational church of Elkader, and also a charter member of Charity Chapter No. 152 Order of the Easter Star, in both of which she was a devoted and faithful worker. No better words can be said than those found in her old Bible in her own handwriting, "But it is good for me to draw near to God. I have put my trust in the Lord God that I may declare all thy works."
