Ambrose M. Hughes, aged 72 years, well known citizen of this place, passed away Tuesday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry Fliehler, Death was due to a stroke of apoplexy.

Ambrose M. Hughes was born in Lycomb County, Pennsylvania, Jan. 9th, 1855. When about two years of age he came to Iowa with his parents. The family settled on a farm near Littleport., and there Ambrose grew to manhood. On Oct. 1, 1877, he was married to Miss Ida Ellen Hale, daughter of Capt. and Mrs. James Ripey Hale, at Elkader. Mr. and Mrs. Hughes had been making plans to celebrate their golden wedding Oct. 1, 1927. Following their marriage they settled on a farm near Littleport where they resided until April 1895, when Mr. Hughes bought the farm just west of town and moved here. Mr. and Mrs. Hughes have been residents of Strawberry Point ever since, with the exception of six years spent in Ames while their sons were in college there. Since last April they have made their home with their daughter, Mrs. Cassie Fliehler. Mr. Hughes is survived by his widow and nine children, also twenty-six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The children are: C. B. Hughes of Bloomington, Ill.; Mrs. Eva Cooper of Buckeye, Arizona; Mrs. Jane Anderson of Gilbert; Mrs. Cassie Fliehler of Strawberry Point; Mrs. Harriet Hughes of Cedar Rapids; Andrew Hughes of Lamont; Amos Hughes of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Howard Hughes of Strawberry Point. Two children preceded their father in death, Margaret, who died at the age of four, and James Ripey Hughes, who died March 28, 1923. Mr. Hughes is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Jane McKinnis of Strawberry Point, and two brothers, Amos and Burris of near Littleport. A faithful husband and father, a good neighbor, a Christian man has been taken to his reward, and his many acts of kindness will be remembered by his numerous friends. He was always willing to do his part when asked. He was a member of the Universalist church of Cedar Rapids. Mr. Hughes was also a member of Blue Lodge A.F. & A.M., No. 86, the Modern Brotherhood of America, and the Modern Woodmen. He served on the board of the Strawberry Point Co-Operative Creamery for twenty-four consecutive years. Funeral services were held in the Masonic Temple Friday afternoon conducted by the lodge Chaplain, Rev. W. W. Maxwell. The temple was filled with friends who came to pay their last respects to a good and honest man, one respected by everyone for he has left behind an influence for good and his memory will long live in the hearts of those who knew him. "Gods will, not ours, be done." The casket bearers were: Dr. F. H. Howard, J. P. Dunsmore, L. W. Preston, Alex Porter, J. R. Alderson and H. A. Axtell. The remains were laid to rest in our beautiful cemetery. The out-of-town people who attended the funeral were: Amos Hughes of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Hughes, Harold Theodore and Junior of Bloomington, Ill.; Mrs. Mary Baxter and Mary Ellen of Crescent, Okla.; Mrs. Harriet Hughes of Cedar Rapids; Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Hughes, James, Billy and Kathryn Jane, of Lamont; Mr. and Mrs. Peter Anderson, Bennie, Theodore and Margaret Jean of Gilbert; Mr. and Mrs. B. Hughes and daughter, Mrs. Ella Becker and Miss Dorothy, Amos Hughes and Warren, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Hughes and Mrs. Lena Nading, all of Littleport; and Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Meder and Iva, of Elkader.
