Henry Engelhardt was born January 25, 1853, in Lipen, Koes Anklam, Gotha-Pommeon, Germany. In 1862 he came to America and on March 7, 1874, was married to Reka Schmidt. They lived on a farm 1-2 miles north of St. Olaf. Eighteen years ago they moved to a farm 2 miles west of Farmersburg, where they lived for eight years, coming from there to their home in Farmersburg, where he peacefully spent the last years of his life. He passed away on May 1st at 10:30 p.m., aged 74 years, 3 months and 6 days. Their union was blessed with 12 children, four of whom have preceded the father in death, Minnie, aged 3; Karl, four days; and two boy twins, dying in infancy. Those left to mourn the departed are his wife and the following children: William near Riceville, Iowa; Hattie, Mrs. Henry Jarms, near Monona; Rudolph, near Farmersburg; Albert, in Wagner township; Emma, Mrs. Ed Kurth, in Wagner township; Frank, near St. Olaf; Amanda, Mrs. Arthur Schmidt, of read township; and Arno, near Monona. He also leaves 22 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. August Krambeer of Luana, and Mrs. Louis Heckendorf of California. Funeral services were held Wednesday at one o'clock at the German Lutheran church by Rev. W. Kraft and Rev. Tysdal of St. Olaf, where a large crowd of sympathizing friends and neighbors came to pay respect to a kind neighbor and friend. Burial was at Clayton Center.
