Obituary, Manchester, Delaware Co., Iowa Oct. 1913

Slyvester Toney, an Early settler and Long-time resident of Richland Township, this County passed away at the home of his daughter. Mrs. H.V. Hill. Sioux City,Iowa. on Sunday afternoon. October 12, 1913, after an illness of two weeks, the
culmination of an attack of Bright's disease. Mr. Toney was nearly 80 years of age.

On tuesday mourning the body of Mr. Toney was bought to this city and taken to Strawberry Point for burial. funeral services being held there yesterday mourning. Accompanying the body were the wife and daughter, Mrs. Hill.

Mr. Toney is survived by his widow and three children. These are Jay Toney,whose home is in Omaha: Mrs. Ola Edmunds Hill of Sioux City: and Mrs. Orpha May, wife of Dr. J. A. May, of this city.

Mr. Toney was born near La Porte, Indiana, February 22, 1834, and lived there until he was fourteen years, when the family removed to Niles, Michigan, later coming to Richland township, this county, and settling on the old Blaisdell farm. On September 14, 1860, Mr Toney was united in marriage with Miss Amella Barry, the ceremony taking place at East McGregor, Wisconsin. Mr. & Mrs. Toney resided on a farm in Richland Township for nearly thirty years, coming to Manchester in the sping of 1910. After a residence of a year or more here they went to Omaha to meet their with their son, Jay. it was while on a visit to their daughter in Sioux City that Mr. Toney was taken ill and although he was given the most devoted care passed away.

Mr. Toney was a genial, likable man with friends in large number who will receive the news of his death with sadness. He was a kind neighbor and a good citizen, and will be long remembered for many unrecorded deeds of charity and helpfulness to those in need. his long residence in this county gave him anacquaintance which he greatly prized, and he removed from the familiar scenes and the old friends with reluctance. In his death the family is assured the sympathy of the community.
