Alexander Christian Stuvland was born in Vofsen, Hegeland, Norway, May 5, 1848. At the age of eighteen he began teaching school. When he was twenty-five years of age he emigrated from Norway and came to Clayton county, Iowa, where he taught parochial school for a number of years.
On June 22, 1877, he was united in marriage to Ingeborg Lien. This union was blessed by ten children, six of whom have passed away before him. After his marriage he moved to Six Miles Grove and Lyle, Minnesota, where he taught for six years. He then moved back to Clayton county, Iowa, and began farming. Later on, he was engaged in general store business at Gunder and Clermont, Iowa.
He retired in 1910, and moved to Northfield, Minnesota. Since September 1925, he has lived in Minneapolis, where he passed away at his home at 3135 - 17th Avenue, So., March 22, 1927, after an illness of several months.
Surviving him are his wife, two daughters, Ida, who lives at home, and Mrs. Robert O. Straughn, also of Minneapolis, two sons, Adolph of Tyler, Minnesota, and Melvin, of Garden City, Minnesota, five grandchildren, and an older brother, John, at Everette, Washington.
Memorial services were held at Minneapolis Friday evening, March 25, 1927, and at Northfield Saturday, March 26, 1927. Mr. Stuvland was laid to rest at the Oakland cemetery in Northfield, Minnesota.
