Clayton County Register, Thur., 03 Feb. 1927. Garnavillo column.

Louis John Marting was born on March 15th, 1870, as the youngest son of Gerhart Marting and his wife Wilhelmina Meerhoff in Farmersburg township. On April 13th, 1884, he was confirmed by Rev. Sommerland in St. Paul's church here.

On March 25, 1913, he was united in marriage to Miss Christina Hannenberger at Eyota, Minnesota. To this union were born four children: Erna, Gilbert, Wesley and Lyle. The little daughter preceded the father in death on October 22, 1918.

Mr. and Mrs. Marting made their home on the old home place about three miles north of Garnavillo. He had always enjoyed good health and was very much interested in his agricultural pursuits. On Friday morning January 21, he left for the woods intending to finish his work there that day. A tree which he and his hired man had cut was caught and was necessary that another tree had to be cut down. While working on the other tree, a limb broke and struck Mr. Marting with such force on the head that death was instantaneous. The accident happened about 3 o'clock in the afternoon.

Those who mourn his untimely death are his grief stricken wife, his sons, Gilbert aged 11 years, Wesley8 and Lyle 2; two brothers, Hy of Luana and Christ of Clayton township; four sisters, Mrs. Anna Bierbaum of Griswold, Iowa, Mrs. Mary Ziegler of Luana, Mrs. Julia Werger of Farmersburg, and Mrs. Carrie Kersten of Mendon township, and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at St. Paul's church Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Braun officiating. Interment in the new cemetery.
