Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 10 Jul. 1919.
Mary Regina Zittergreen, nee Wassmund, was born on the 17th of March, 1830, in Wasterhusen, Germany. She was the third of a family of four. Her parents followed the occupation of weaving. In her early life she lost her mother and since then most of the duties of the home lay upon her shoulders. She subsequently learned to struggle in the face of adversity and this fitted her out for her station in life.
In 1851 she was married to Carl Erich Zittergreen. The earnings of the husband just gave the family the bare necessities, and struggling under adverse conditions they decided finally to immigrate to America. On their arrival they settled on a farm of a previous acquaintance, John Reimer, near Garnavillo.
Later they acquired a piece of land near East Elkport. On this farm deceased spent the greater part of the rest of her life, it was granted her to see better days than before.
Her husband having died in 1900 she stayed with her only son Charles who had taken over the farm and subsequently followed him to his present home at Garber. The deceased was in good health until her last illness.
Seven weeks ago she was stricken with influenza and she never recovered from its effects. Her strength gradually failed her and she passed away quietly at 8:30 on last Sunday evening. The deceased reached the age of 89 years. There are one son, 15 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren to mourn her loss.
Interment was made Wednesday afternoon in the Lutheran Cemetery at Elkport, in the presence of a large circle of friends and relatives. The Rev. P. E. Stolz of Elkport officiated at the funeral service.
