The death of Mrs. Herman Niemeyer occurred Wednesday, June 25th, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Wm. Needham, at Superior, Wis. She was born in Hanover, Germany, January 7th, 1840, and had reached the age of seventy-nine years, five months and eighteen days at the time of her death.
In 1861 she came to America with her husband, locating at Galena, Ill. Later they moved to Lansing, Iowa, and in 1889 the family moved to Elkader where Mr. Niemeyer died. Mrs. Niemeyer lived here until about a year ago when she went to live with her daughter at Superior, Wis., where she spent her last days.
There were eleven children born to this union, nine of whom survive. The living are: Henry, of Stockton, Ill.; F. A. of Elkader; Herman, of Albert Lea, Minn.; John, Winslow, Ill.; Theodore, Chicago: George, Rockford, Ill.; Clara, Mrs. K. C. Gifford of Kennewick, Wash.; Mary, Mrs. Wm. Needham of Superior, Wis.; and Helena of Elkader. Michael died June 2nd, 1918, and Gustave died in infancy.
The remains were brought to the home of her son, F. A. Niemeyer, at Elkader on Friday and on Saturday the funeral was held at St. Joseph's Church at 9 o'clock. Dean G. L. Haxmeyer of Lansing acted as celebrant at a Requeim High Mass and was assisted by Rev. Tiltzen of Ossian, Rev. Horsefield of McGregor, and Rev. J. P. Taken of Elkader. Dean G. L. Haxmeyer also spoke a few words at the closing of the service, speaking very highly of Mrs. Niemeyer as a good mother and a home maker.
All of the children were in attendance except Mrs. K. C. Gifford and Herman Niemeyer who were unable to reach here in time.
